X-Men have something to prove

Steve Konchalski’s St. Francis Xavier X-Men men’s basketball team had a season to remember in many good ways last year until it ended in bitter disappointment.

This year’s X-Men, 17-3 in the regular season, intend to use the experience gained at the CIS tournament last year in Ottawa to take the next step.

Basketball V-Reds work in progress

Brent Baker feels the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds are ready to step out of the AUS men's basketball conference cellar, but one step at a time, please.

If the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds are to make the playoffs in the Atlantic University Sport men’s basketball conference this season, Alex DesRoches, right, shown here in action against Cape Breton last season, figures to play a major role. V-Reds are coming off a 3-17 season under first year coach Brent Baker in 2008-09. They host Dalhousie Friday and St. FX Saturday.

"This is still a very young team," Baker said. "Let's put the anointing oil away for a while. We've still got a lot of work ahead of us. We're coming but it's going to be a work in progress."

Dalhousie men's basketball squad deals with roster turnover

Dalhousie Tigers guard Simon Farine, who averaged 19.1 points a game last season, is a player-of-the-year candidate.

The Atlantic University Sport men’s basketball season opens on Friday. The Dalhousie Tigers, ranked fifth in the country, visit the New Brunswick Varsity Reds in Fredericton, N.B., while the Saint Mary’s Huskies head to Sydney for two-game meeting with the nationally-seventh-ranked Cape Breton Capers.

Simon Farine has some new sidekicks.

The Dalhousie Tigers star and reigning Atlantic University Sport men’s basketball playoff MVP has a new-look supporting cast as the club begins its championship defence.
