Late Buckley Jumper lifts Stingers to win
Concordia (4-1) 72, Bishop's (2-3) 70 6'1" Damian Buckley hit a foul line jumper with 6 seconds remaining to lift the Stingers to a dramatic win over the Gaiters in Montreal. Buckley pulled up when his defender tried to cut off his path to the rim and was true, forcing Bishop's into a rushed attempt at a final shot that they couldn't get off. Earlier, 6'1" sophomore point guard Andrew Wright hit a dramatic three pointer at the end of the 24 second clock to tie the game with 30 seconds remaining to lift the Gaiters into a tie. Concordia played without 6'3" Dwayne Buckley, out indefinitely with a knee injury that is still swollen, and 6'8" Jamal Gallier, who continues to fight a leg contusion. Buckley will see a doctor later this week while Gallier warmed up but could not go. Damian Buckley led the Stingers with 23 points while 6'5" freshman James Clark had 13 points and 8 rebounds to lead Concordia. 6'7" Hermon Tesfaghebriel led Bishop's with 17 while 6'1" Junior Nicolas, averaging over 20 ppg, could only muster 11 as Stingers 6'2" Andre Johnny did a fine job guarding him all evening. Freshman Kevin Selmon added 11 for Bishop's. Concordia won despite going only 6% (1 for 16) from three point land and going only 50% from the foul line. The Stingers forced 20 Bishop's turnovers and held a healthy rebounding edge to allow them steal a win. Bishop's led the game by 10 early in the first quarter but Concordia got it back to 4 and then took a 3 point lead by halftime. The game was tight throughout the second half. Concordia has a quick turnaround tomorrow as they face McGill at 4 PM.
