Birds Edge Clan in Overtime Thriller

UBC (11-2) 86, Simon Fraser (7-6) 84 6'4" Blaine Labranche came off the bench to score 26 points including the go-ahead three in overtime while fellow reserve 6'6" Kyle Watson added 20 including a pair of free throws with 17 seconds remaining in regulation to force the extra frame as the T-Birds came back from an early 10 point deficit to hold off the hometown Clan in Burnaby. The Clan played without 6'6" Nolan Holmes, their leading rebounder, who is out with a concussion. UBC's two leading scorers, 6'3" Chris Dyck and 6'7" Matt Rachar combined for only 5 points on the night with Rachar fouling out in a game in which the teams combined for 60 fouls and 72 free throw attempts. Matt Kuzminski led 5 Simon Fraser players in double figures with 22 points. The win was the 11th in a row for UBC in the head-to-head series. After each playing a pair of games this coming weekend against other Canada West rivals, the Clan and T-Birds will meet again next Tuesday at UBC's War Memorial Gym.
