OUA West: Gryphons win with great defensive effort
Guelph (11-9) 80, Lakehead (8-13) 61 One of the hallmarks of the Guelph Gryphon program for as long as Head Coach Chris O'Rourke has been around as both a player and coach has been the Gryphs ability to defend. For the first time in many years, cracks in the consistent, stingy Guelph "d" were starting to show. However, this evening in Thunder Bay, that tough d returned as Guelph led the normally high-scoring T-Wolves to just 61 points in routing Lakehead and putting themselves in great shape to host a home playoff game. 6'9" Duncan Milne led the way with 20 points and 6 rebounds but his ability to seal off the paint and come up with several hustle plays was instrumental in the win. Guelph also got a sterling offensive effort from 6'3" Borko Popic who had 21 points including 3-6 from 3. The T-Wolves had one significant run in the game when, down 11 at halftime, they closed the gap to 4 midway through the third quarter however 6'3" Matt Powell missed a dunk and then Popic responded with a 3 and Guelph was never seriously threatened thereafter. 6'4" Kiraan Posey had 20 points to lead Lakehead, who must win tomorrow night against the Gryphons or they will be eliminated from the OUA West playoffs as Laurier owns the tie-breaker between the 2 teams.
