Using a dominant effort on the offensive glass, in transition and inside in general, the Citadins built up an early 13 point lead and then had leads as large as 38 midway through the fourth in hammering Bishop's 82-47 as the QUBL (Quebec University Basketball League) kicked off the 2010-11 season in Lennoxville.
UQAM had 8 offensive rebounds in the first quarter alone, using an 11-0 run to break an early 4-4 tie as Greg St. Armand had 8 of his 16 points in the opening frame. Leading the charge on the offensive glass was active 6'4" freshman Alexandre Bernard (Outaouais Cegep, Gatineau, PQ) who had 4 "o" boards of his own, finishing with a double double including game highs of 17 points (13 in the first half) and 11 rebounds. The teams traded baskets for much of the up tempo, scrambly second quarter as both teams had difficulty scoring in the quarter court apart from second, third and sometimes fourth chances.
Bernard is showing that UQAM has two significant newcomers up front, overshadowing at least for tonight the more highly touted 6'7" Vincent Lanctot-Fortier (Montmorency Cegep), who also was steady. Bernard's breakaway dunk gave UQAM their largest lead to that point at 33-17 and then later his strong finish inside gave UQAM as 45-24 lead at the half. But it is defensively in the paint where the pair of freshman are arguably more productive, providing a huge presence, cleaning the glass, altering shots and helping to start Citadins break.
Still, the veteran presence and offensive spark for UQAM still originates from St. Armand, Eric Cote and Artrus Plesius, a lefty who shoots 3's. Frantz St-Cyr also was big from the perimeter in the second half with 3 3's as part of his 10 points, one of 5 Citadins to reach double figures.
Tim Hunter led Bishop's, still winless on the season, with 9 points. The Gaiters gave up 21 offensive rebounds to UQAM and hurt themselves with 32 turnovers.
