Lakehead, Brandon win at Super 8

Thunderwolves thump Red River College at Brandon tourney

Thunder Bay, Ont. – The Lakehead Thunderwolves men’s basketball team took care of business Friday night as they opened the Brandon Super 8 men’s basketball tournament with a 94-40 win over the Red River College Rebels at Brandon, Manitoba.

The Wolves' starting five jumped out to a 30-5 first quarter lead and never looked back, led by post Yoosrie Salhia’s 17 points and eight rebounds in 13 minutes. Guard Jamie Searle continued his strong play, posting 14 points and five rebounds.

Three players made their Lakehead debuts in the contest after all recovering from lower body injuries. Freshman guard Matt Nagy scored 12 points with seven rebounds, while forward Anthony McIntosh added 10 points and three rebounds. Cam Hornby scored six points in his first game since offseason ankle surgery.

Josh Olaes had ten points and six assists for RRC.

Lakehead dominated the boards, out-rebounding RRC 55-34 but continued their struggles from the free throw line, shooting 13-26 for the game.

The Thunderwolves will take on the host Brandon Bobcats Saturday night in the rubber match between the two squads after they split a two-game series last weekend at Thunder Bay. Brandon beat Canadian Mennonite University in their tournament opener.
