LAURENTIAN DOWN WESMEN IN TOURNEY OPENER
The Laurentian Voyageurs opened the 2009 Pembina Chrysler Invitational on a winning note defeating the host Winnipeg Wesmen 78-71 Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
Second year guard Isiah Pasquale poured in a game high 30 points, including eight-three pointers to lead the Voyageurs. Matas Tirilis added 18 points and eight rebounds. Manny Pasquale finished with 12 points and four assists.
The Wesmen were led by fourth year guard Nick Lother's 25 points and five steals. Peter Lomuro added 18 points. Ryan Willerton had eight points and two blocks.
Laurentian gained the upper hand early on leading 17-13 after a tight defensive opening quarter of play. The Voyageurs were able to extend their lead in the second quarter outscoring the Wesmen 25-18 to take a 42-31 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Winnipeg came out of the halftime break on fire. Led by Lomuro's eight points in the first three minutes, the Wesmen went on a 10-2 run to cut the lead to 44-41. Laurentian did not seem to panic as they went on a 10-0 run to open up a 54-41 lead late in the quarter. The Voyageurs led 62-47 after three quarters.
In the final quarter, Winnipeg rattled off seven straight points to cut the lead to 62-54 but Laurentian was able to match the Wesmen basket for basket down the stretch to secure the victory.
Laurentian will face Manitoba Saturday night at 8:00 p.m.. Winnipeg will face Concordia at 6:00 p.m.

STINGERS HOLD OFF BISONS FOR WIN
The Concordia Stingers defeated the Manitoba Bisons 86-74 Friday night at the Pembina Chrysler Invitational Tournament at the Duckworth Centre. The Stingers were led by James Clark's double-double 17 points and 16 rebounds. Evens Laroche added 16 points. The Bisons were led by Eric Garcia and Nathan Dixon, each scoring 17 points. Dixon led the team with six assists. Jonar Huertas finished with 14 points. Concordia dominated the first half and went into the halftime break leading 51-30. After an even third quarter, Manitoba made a charge in the fourth quarter outscoring Concordia 26-20 to make the final score 86-74. Concordia will face the host Winnipeg saturday night at 6:00 p.m.. Manitoba will face Laurentian at 8:00 p.m.
