Golden Bears and the upstart Fraser Valley Cascades will join the UVic Vikes
men's basketball team for the Guy Vetrie Memorial Tournament October 23-25 at
McKinnon Gym.

TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE:

Saturday, October 24th:

Vikes vs. Fraser Valley - 7pm

Sunday, October 25th:
Alberta vs. Fraser Valley - 1pm
Vikes vs. Carleton - 3pm

SCOUTING THE UVIC VIKES

For five consecutive years the Vikes have led the Canada West in defensive
scoring, which they have parlayed into an 80-29 record. In the off-season, the
Vikes have brought in a wealth of new talent to help compensate for their loss
of last year's top three scorers. Dan Evans, Omid Pourmomen, Zac Andrus and
Nick Adair are three immediate-impact transfers who have proven themselves at
the college level.

SCOUTING THE CARLETON RAVENS

Carleton won their sixth CIS Championship in seven years last March, defeating
UBC Thunderbirds 87-77. Eleven players return for the title defence, but the
Ravens lose key contributors Aaron Doornekamp, Rob Saunders and Stu Turnbull.
Carleton hosted their own House-Laughton tourney this weekend, and already have
a win under their belts against the NCAA's Towson Tigers.

SCOUTING THE ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS

For the first time in 26 years Don Horwood will not be pacing the sidelines for
the Golden Bears. Greg Francis, a former member of Team Canada and coach of
Canada's Junior Men's team, takes over as bench boss. Alberta is a young team,
with Francis gaining commitments from some of the province's top prep players.

SCOUTING THE FRASER VALLEY CASCADES

Fraser Valley is entering their fourth season of CIS competition, and will be
seeking their third post-season appearance with a young and talented roster.
The Cascades will look to push the tempo with a slew of high-scoring guards and
wings, including the conference's 2008-09 Rookie of the Year Sam Freeman and
former BC High School MVP Joel Friesen.
