Mickey Place UPEI Tournament: UNB and Brock get 1st round wins

Brock 79, UPEI 77   Capping a dramatic comeback from 19 down late in the third quarter, 6'1" freshman Cedric Kasongo tipped in a miss at the buzzer to give the Badgers the victory over the host Panthers in an exciting first day game at the Mickey Place UPEI tournament.  6'2" Jonathan Cooper returned to action after one season's absence and made his presence felt immediately with 21 points and 10 rebounds while Manock Lual added 17 points and 6'0" Terrence Brown added 16 points.

It was a tale of two halves as the Panthers led 51-32 at the half, shooting 63% from the field and 55% from the 3 in the half while Brock turned it over 15 times and shot 38% from the field. In the 2nd half UPEI scored only 26 points total, shot 38% and had the majority of their 27 turnovers. The Panthers likely lost the game on the foul line going only 15-33 from the stripe.  Brock's forward Mark Gibson finished with 22pts and 9 rebs while Player-of-the-game 6'1" PG Andrew Kraus had 14pts 8rebs and 7asts while Kasongo added 15pts and 5 rebs.  Brock Coach Brad Rootes:  "We showed great character and determination today to come bac,k down by so much so late. We executed very well in the 2nd half and especially in the 4th Q and it paid off."  "We were very fortunate to be able to come back and win this game, that being said we did not quit or give up on ourselves which put us in position to salvage the win."
"We went to Gibby who had been great all night down low and his shot just rolled off and Ced crashed hard and was rewarded with the game winning tip in. He made a great play."

UNB 82, York 64  UNB took an early lead including 43-27 lead into halftime and cruised to defeat the Lions in the first game at UPEI.
