6'3" freshman Simon Bibeau had the most impressive game of his young career with 30 points on 6-10 3's while 6'0" sophomore point guard Olivier Bouchard added 20 points and 7 assists as the Redmen clamped down defensively, especially inside and then held off a late Lancer charge to claim their first victory under new Head Coach Dave DeAveiro.
The Redmen built up an early 20 point lead, running their offense well and getting several back door layups and open 3's. More importantly, McGill held 6'8" Liam Philip to just 4 points and 8 rebounds in 34 minutes. Meanwhile, unheralded Redmen five men 6'9" Greg Gause and 6'8" Tristan Tremblay combined for 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Windsor, which trailed by 7 after the first quarter and then by as many as 20, made a late charge led by 6'3" Isaac Kuon (25 points), bringing the game back to within 1 with about 2 1/2 minutes remaining but McGill held on with some clutch free throw shooting (15-18 ft. overall) to claim the win against a program many see as the favorites in the OUA West this season.
The Lancers, who have several regulars not playing or injured, also got a nice effort off the bench from 5'9" Tyrone Bramble who knocked down a pair of open 3's during the comeback attempt.
Windsor travels state side to a tournament next weekend while McGill hosts their annual Redbird Classic with UPEI, Western and Queen's.
