Second-year Alberta Golden Bears Head Coach Greg Francis, who doubles as Canada's National Under-19 team head coach in the summer, has added a former Canadian National team teammate to his coaching staff as Peter Guarasci joins the Bears. 6'8" Guarasci was a solid front court contributor to Canada's national team program when it flourish earlier this decade with Jay Triano and Steve Nash.
Guarasci was on Francis' staff this past summer with Canada's entry at the FIBA Americas U-19 tournament in San Antonio and the Nats captured the Bronze medal at this tournament, qualifying for next summer's FIBA U19 World Championship 30 Jun. 2011 - 10 Jul. 2011 in Latvia.
Both Francis and Guarasci attended Fairfield University although Guarasci transfered after two seasons (92-93, 93-94), the year prior to Francis joining the Stags. Francis became a Fairfield legend with a 26 point, 8 3's game in the first round of the NCAA tournament against North Carolina and was later named to the Fairfield Athletic Hall-of-Fame. Guarasci meanwhile transfered to Simon Fraser which then was a member of the NAIA and in his senior year, Guarasci was named NAIA Player-of-the-Year. Both went on to stellar careers in Europe with Guarasci playing in Italy's Seria A among other top European leagues.
Guarasci played at Niagara Falls A.N. Myer with former Duke Blue Devil Greg Newton forming one of the most imposing front lines in Canadian high school basketball history.
