It really blows my mind to see X and Laval not drop at all after their losses this past weekend. Why do teams from other conferences (OUA Can West) get penalized for losses when Laval ( who has beat noone all year) and X ( who has lost a bunch of times in the last week injuries or not) not get penalized for losing to unranked teams? I find it weird that the coaches refuse to punish these mediocre teams in the rankings
Just as a point of discussion, here are the top 10 ranked CIS teams based solely on winning % of their overall CIS records (league and non conference games).
No allowance is made for strength of schedule, RPI and so on.
1. Carleton 26-0 1.000
2. UBC 21-2 .913
3, TWU 20-3 .870
4, Sask 23-4 .852
5. St.FX 21-6 .778
6. Concordia 15-5 .750
7. Toronto 20-7 .741
8. CBU 17-6 .739
9. Laval 15-7 .682
10.Dalhousie 16-8 .667
Info taken from Martin Timmerman CIS results site.
These so called mediocre teams didn't drop in the rankings because every other team around them also lost in the last week. All 5 teams from 6 thru 10 lost at least 1 game. Perhaps Dal should have vaulted all the way into the 6th position (from the ranks of the unranked) as a result of 1 victory?
IMO, the OUA West teams get more love than they deserve from the coaches.
Lakehead is #6 and Windsor is #10 and Laurier is just outside the top 10 with 95 votes.
But based on all CIS games played, including non conference, the overall winning % of all CIS teams has Lakehead ranked #11, Windsor #13 and Laurier #15.
So technically, none of the OUA West teams are actually in the top 10.
From watching games online this year, I think none of these three teams comes close to the best OUA West teams of the recent past, in particular, the Wilson Cup winning Windsor team in 2007.
The conference may be competitive but no team truly distinguishes itself as being a legitimate national contender.
X is the team that really bothers me.. They have a cupcake schedule this year getting Memorial, UPEI and UNB 4 times each. They are 0-4 combined against CBU and Dal this year yet just recently got passed by CBU in the top 10 and are still ahead of Dal..
X has become the Duke of the CIS.. they maintain a high ranking based on name recgonition, regardless of how good they are any particiular season.
It's not gonna matter the can west team in the top 5 that doesn't make the final will get the wild card anyways.
