CIS Blackberry Top 10 for 1 March 2011

Some may have noticed that once the post-season hit, this site stopped publishing our Top 10.  In my opinion, once the post-season begins, the list loses importance and relevance.  The CIS has published a list today that includes a team that is ranked but has been eliminated (Windsor) - and eliminated by a team (Laurier) that is only given honourable mention.  I am a proponent of suspending Top 10 rankings once playoffs begin.  As well, calling these the "final rankings" is a bit of a miscast - final rankings are best represented after the CIS Final 8 championship tournament in my opinion.

MEN'S BASKETBALL (final rankings)

(regular season record) / votes (first-place votes) / (previous rankings)
1. Carleton (22-0 / 1-0 playoffs) / 468 pts (39) / (1)
2. UBC (22-2 / 2-0 playoffs) / 429 / (2)
3. Saskatchewan (20-4 / 2-0 playoffs) / 383 / (3)
4. Trinity Western (21-3 / 2-1 playoffs) / 327 / (4)
5. Cape Breton (19-1) / 318 / (5)
6. Lakehead (17-5 / 1-0 playoffs) / 253 / (7)
7. StFX (15-5) / 243 / (6)
8. Dalhousie (14-6) / 182 / (9)
9. Concordia (12-4) / 148 / (10)
10. Windsor (16-6 / 0-1 playoffs) / 77 / (8)
Other teams receiving votes: Laval (69), Wilfrid Laurier (60), Alberta (46).

These rankings are horrible.. why is TWU still ahead of CBU despite losing to Fraser Valley at home?? How is X ahead of Dal when Dal finished 2nd in the AUS and swept both games vs X?
And how can you rank Windsor over Laurier when Laurier just ended the Lancers season??

Ok, there are 42 votes in the Coaches poll. right?
And the number in parentheses beside Carleton is suppose to represent first place votes, correct?
So what's the with the (39) beside Carleton this week?
Did those three votes go to another school (or schools) or were there votes not cast ?
Very peculiar.

I agree that final rankings don't make much sense before the season is officially over. Despite Laurier knocking out Windsor, the Lancers did just beat them twice in a one week span at the end of the regular season, including beating them by 33 at Laurier. It was a good playoff game by two very talented teams.

These rankings are a joke and the coaches need to be called out by the media and fans alike. The lack of respect shown to CBU (yes, i know they had a horrible pre-season)has gone on way to long...and as Adam said, how can X still be ranked ahead of Dal. With that said, X may very well beat Dal this weekend on semi final saturday, but at this point the Tigers deserve to be ranked ahead.

I agree there are some oddities at the bottom of the rankings. But how exactly is CBU being disrespected? They've been behind the four teams ahead of them the entire season, with Carleton, UBC and Sask being the top three since the beginning of December. And news flash, those three teams are 46-1 since then! The only loss was Sask which lost on the road once at TWU.

Bill:
You're not discounting your Huskies chances vs X, are you?

X beating Dal would not be a shock to too many I dont think Bill, but we agree, at the moment Dal should be ranked higher.
Luckily this is the last time the coahces can screw up this poll.. at least this season.

Re the AUS- lets see- Dal loses to unranked Acadia and moves up one spot. X wins and drops.
yes i agree it doesn't make sense.

please keep in mind Dal was playing on the road against a desperate team, while the game meant absolutely nothing for Dal.. X beat UNB and UPEI at home..

im not saying X cant or wont beat Dal this weekend, just that it makes no sense for them to be ranked below them right now

Cape Breton has been given more than its due respect.
TWU is ranked ahead of CBU because they are 24-4 while the Capers are 20-6.
Yes, Trinity lost to UFV...but CBU actually lost to Holland College, for pete's sake!
Sorry Bill, but horrible pre-seasons DO matter.
And just remember this...in an eight team conference in which five teams are SIGNIFICANTLY below .500...the AUS has THREE teams in the Top 10.
How, may I ask, is this a slight to the AUS?

Re- Aus. Dal beats X in only 2 meetings they have all season, the last game by 20, and X also loses both games to CBU, 8 of X's 15 conference wins were against UPEI and Memorial, by far the 2 worst teams in the league while Dal and CBU only played 2 games each against these teams. Also, half of Dal's losses were close losses to CBU. The fact Dal was two places behind X does not make any sense at all.

Obviously Coach K still has a lot of pull in the CIS coaching fraternity.

Ok, Memorial I agree is the worst in the AUS no question but UPEI?
The Panthers were TIED for 5th with SMU and Acadia at 7-13 and were only one game back of 4th place UNB (8-12).
I count four teams in the CIS that had a poorer record than UPEI that actually qualified for the post season.
It took a tie breaking formula to put the Panthers out of the playoffs, which hardly justifies them being labeled as "by far" the worst...BTW, CBU beat UPEI by 9 in Sydney and 11 in Charlottetown...compare that to the drubbings the Capers handed X and SMU in Sydney this year.
