Saturday Night Recap

Noteable from Saturday night included the dramatic comeback by Lakehead, down 22 in the first half and 17 after three quarters at home against Laurier and facing a sweep by the Golden Hawks, rallies to win 90-84.   Down 79-70 with under 5 minutes remaining, the Wolves finished the game on a 20-5 run, getting consecutive 3's from Jamie Searle, Ryan Thomson and Greg Carter to battle back and trail 81-79 with just over two minutes to play.  Lakehead then tied the game on a dramatic put-back slam by Brendan King to tie the game at 81 and then won on the foul line.  Searle finished with 23pts 8 rebs 6 ast 4 steals while 6'2" Venzal Russell had 20 pts 7 asts 5 steals.  6'6" Max Allin once again led the way for the Golden Hawks with 21, 8 asts and 7 rebs on 8-17 shooting.  Lakehead retains sole possession of second place in the OUA West at 9-3... Ryerson Rams held on to knock off York 73-72 in North York as David Tyndale's buzzer-beating attempt rimmed out.  Ryerson held leads as large as 12 in the first quarter only to watch York take the lead heading into the fourth.  The Rams stayed in the game on the offensive glass with 17 "o" boards despite not having 6'7" freshman starter Bjorn Michaelsen in the lineup and had a late 6 point lead before the Lions made their final push which fell short.  6'10" Dejan Kravic led York with 18 points and 10 rebounds as the Rams sweep their weekend road games.... In Sudbury, usually mild-mannered Head Coach Shawn Swords was unceremoniously ejected in the first quarter of last night's loss to the Toronto Varsity Blues - a  quick trigger by many accounts.  The Blues pulled away behind the fine work inside of 6'6" Andrew Wasik (26 points, 8 rebounds) plus 16 from 6'5" Alex Hill and a lift from 6'3" Sean Nichol (14 points/2-2 3's).  Vees Isiah Pasquale led all scorers with 30 points including 5-9 3's... Ottawa got 22 from resurgent freshman Johnny Berhame and 20 from 6'6" Warren Ward (also 8 rebounds and 9 turnovers) to push Queen's well into 7th place in the OUA East standings, putting the Gaels in a huge hole, especially on the heels of a pair of Ryerson road wins over the weekend.  The Gaels are already fighting for their playoff lives and next weekend's games in Toronto against the Rams and Varsity Blues could determine their fates even this relatively early in the schedule.  Queen's losses in both of those road games would give them 13 on the season and would likely be at least 4 probably 5 games back in the loss column with only 7 game remaining after next weekend.
OUA East Standings
Carleton 12-0
Toronto 8-4
Laurentian 6-7
York 6-7
Ottawa 5-7
Ryerson 4-8
Queen's 2-11
RMC 0-13.

In the AUS, UPEI grabbed a home victory, defeating Saint Mary's Huskies 88-84 despite 29 points from Joey Haywood as 6'1" guard Terrence Brown stole the show with 30 points including 6 for 11 from beyond the arc.  Cape Breton completed their sweep of Acadia, which hung tough behind 20 points from Alex McLaughlin but could not overcome 26 fouls and 21 turnovers, plus 22 points from 6'1" Jimmy Dorsey.  Capers welcomed back 6'7" Scott Jaspers-Fayer who they eased in to the lineup with 14 minutes while 6'6" Justin Boutilier was a dnp for the Axemen once again.  X hammered MUN 113-61 - the teams meet again today.

In the lone QUBL game, the Stingers withstood a late 16-4 Bishop's charge that got the game back to within 1 with a minute remaining but then 6'2" Kyle Desmarais (24 points to lead all scorers) had the clinching bucket and Concordia survived 86-81 at home.  Tim Hunter had 23 points for the Gaiters including 8 during the big run that almost allowed Bishop's to come all the way back from a 15 point third quarter deficit.  The teams combined for 55 turnovers including 31 by Concordia.  McGill visits Laval in the lone QUBL afternoon game today available on Rouge et Or TV at 3 PM.

Shawn Swords got double T'd......was it something he said?
Seriously, what did Swords, who will never be confused with Joe Raso when it comes to temper tantrums, utter in order to get himself tossed?
Does anyone know who was the the ref who gave him the heave ho?
I have one guy in mind already....et tu, Bruce?
There are two or three refs working OUA East games...all noticeably short in stature....who have have what I call a serious case of 'Napoleon complex'...kinda anal retentive, don't you know.
