Cape Breton 101, St. FX 98 in Two Overtimes

In a wild finish in Antigonish, a three by 6'3" Paris Carter gave the Capers the lead for good with about 2 minutes remaining in the second overtime and CBU survived three X attempts at a game-tying 3 in the final seconds to sweep the season series.  X had finished regulation on a 15-2 run in the final 3 minutes of the fourth quarter and then appeared to take over in the first overtime, leading by 5 late before the Capers came back.  Earlier, X had blown an 18 point lead built up with a dominating first half.  X had the tempo and crowd in their favour in the first half and it appeared X-Men were on their way.  However, the Capers took over in the third quarter and later, up 4 early in the fourth, stretched their lead late, taking advantage of some poor X shot selection and big makes by Carter to stretch the lead to 13 very late.  But Charlie Spurr and Jeremy Dunn hit back-to-back 3's to actually give X the lead in regulation before Scott Jaspers-Fayer hit a pair of free throws to re-tie the game, setting up the two OTs.

This game was the worst I've ever seen an AUS team (CBU) behave in 20 years of watching - and no, I'm not an X fan. It was an emabarrassment for the league.

I was at the game as well and was disappointed in the poor job done keeping fans from interacting with the players, that being said the CBU players time and time again escalated the situation by going towards the fans and yelling back and forth with them. The refs did not take control and should have used a few for "T'S" to get this game under control. Shame on the CBU coach for even letting his players act like a bunch of morons and shame on the X event staff for alowing fans to be such idiots.

Anon 11:15....
Your observation about CBU merely confirms what most AUS observers have known all along...that Jim Charters is more of a zoo keeper than an actual coach.
Oh sure, he can recruit very talented ballers no doubt but in terms of running his team with structure and discipline, Charters ranks near the bottom of the coaches in entire CIS.
Cape Breton played very poorly against Calgary last March at nationals, even though they were obviously the more athletic of the two teams.
It would not surprise me in the least if they stumble in Halifax again at this years Final 8 tournament.
A tournament tested, mentally tough team like Carleton or even Sask would rip this unruly menagerie of talented individuals to shreds.

You must have missed 2 years ago when Garry Gallimore (asst coach for X and former player) slap a CBU score keeper in the face. THAT was the worst behavior I have ever seen. And no, I am not a CBU fan!

That Gallimore incident took place at CBU and while he and Coach K were culpable for their actions, Charters, his players and the extremely rowdy Caper fans did not help matters much, to say the least.
I think both schools have allowed this rivalry to escalate to dangerously heated levels.
For example, as has been pointed out here already, security and crowd control is pitifully inadequate both in Antigonish and Sydney.
I'm afraid if measures aren't taken soon, we will see a very serious incident in the near future.

Ok I saw the game on the web. The event staff are not too sophisticated but they shouldn't have to be with proper decorum on behalf of the players. This was an emotionally charged game and the emotions spilled onto the floor and spilled from the stands into the game a bit more than they should have. Thankfully no-one was hurt and no-one pulled a stupid like Gallimore. I'm an X fan and Cape Breton deserved to win, they talked a little too much trash and the refs were continually harangued by both teams trying to get the edge,...almost as much as Carletons' Dave Smart I'm afraid to honestly say based on many yrs of season tickets attendance at Carleton. X will get that talented Baltimore bunch if they have to in the playoffs.Play-on play fair and play safe.

I wouldn't compare Smart to the coaches of these two teams.
First, in the case of Carleton, it is Smart and only Smart who "harangues" the refs.
His players have very little to say to the officials. In all the years I have watched Dave Smart coached Carleton teams, I think I have seen a Carleton player take a technical maybe once or twice, and it wasn't because of something said to a ref.
But with X and CBU, I saw players mouthing off all the time.
I know because CBU and X each played in Ottawa's Jack Donahue tournament in the past two years so I got to see both teams up close.
X players complain a lot, with their 5th year senior T-Bear Upshaw the worst offender.
I thought he was going to lose it in that tournament last October.
From my observations, though, neither team is well disciplined and down the line that will hurt both of them come tournament time.
