Panthers Hammer Varsity Reds in opener for both sides

UPEI (1-0) 102, UNB (0-1) 70 Courtesy of UPEI Panthers Basketball Blog... UPEI opened up the game 15-5 after Brent McLaren hit a three at the 6:38 mark of the first quarter and were never threatened the rest of the way as they rolled to the 32 point win. Andrew Black went on a 9-0 run of his own, scoring on two from the line, an offensive putback, a three pointer, and another layup on a feed from Manock Lual at the end of the second quarter before McLaren banged in a running three pointer as time expired to make it 59-37 at the half. UPEI dominated the boards outrebounding UNB 49-28 with a 19-8 advantage on the offensive glass. UPEI also had 14 steals as their uptempo offense led to transition hoops, open three pointers, and plenty of easy handoffs inside to Manock Lual, Andrew Black, and Andreas Franz. Lual had 18, Brent McLaren 17 and 8 assists, Black had 16 points, 14 boards and 4 steals, and jared Budd 13. The Panthers shot 57% in the first half and 50% for the game, with UNB shooting 45% in the first stanza and 42 for the game. Colin Swift scored 20 for the Reds, and Colton Wilson had 19 and 10 boards.
The teams meet again tomorrow at 3PM in Charlottetown.
