Thanksgiving Weekend Preview

The CIS pre-season kicks off on limited fronts this coming weekend, highlighted by the Concordia NIKE tournament in Montreal, which is becoming a Thanksgiving tradition and now acts as the unofficial launch to the CIS pre-season. Actually, the Montreal area will be the focus of CIS play this weekend as American International College Yellow Jackets, an NCAA Division 2 program from Springfield, Massachusetts, will come in to play UQAM and Bishop's over the weekend. The hometown Stingers, who entered last season's CIS Nationals in Halifax as Canada's #1 ranked team before being upset by a scorching hot St. Mary's Huskies squad in the first round at Halifax, are the pre-tournament favorites at the NIKE however Laurier, Laurentian and Memorial also have a shot at the tournament championship this year. The weekend action actually kicks off Thursday night as Memorial visits McGill for a 7 PM ET start at the Love Competition Hall in downtown Montreal. Also on Thursday, new Laurentian Head Coach Shawn Swords makes his coaching debut in his hometown of Ottawa as the Voyageurs meet Algonquin Thunder (OCAA/CCAA) at the Ron Port Athletic Center in Ottawa for an 8:30 PM ET start. As well, Saskatchewan Huskies will face Lakeland (ALTA) College at a neutral site in Saskatchewan beginning at 9 PM ET. As previously mentioned here a couple of days ago, Friday night in Moncton, NB, Acadia Axemen and St. Mary's Huskies will meet in the Irving Oil Hoops Classic in a rematch of last season's AUS Championship game in which the Axemen prevailed. This game is a non-conference affair. American International will play a pair of games in Quebec over the weekend, Saturday at Bishop's in Lennoxville in a 7 PM ET start followed by a game the following afternoon (Sunday) at UQAM in Montreal at 1 PM ET. American International features 5'9" senior guard Jeff Dosato, a native of Montreal who previously played for Dawson College in Quebec CEGEP. UPDATE: Carleton Ravens will host Quebec CEGEP de Sainte-Foy tonight at the Raven's Nest in Ottawa. Sainte-Foy is coached by the son of Laval head coach Jacques Paiement and are perennially strong in the Quebec CEGEP league. The Ottawa Gee-Gees will travel to St. Bruno, Quebec to meet Champlain-St.Lambert CEGEP on Friday night.
