Good blog buddy Jamie Ziegel, himself a former Western Mustangs star point guard from the mid-1980’s, sent in his good wishes and a request for some retro posts. Although a comprehensive history of overachieving, pare-shaped, buck-toothed point guards who won lots of games including leading teams to the Nationals isn’t currently available, we were able to dig up a nice article on the 1983-84 Saskatchewan Huskies which included All-Canadian Byron Tokarchuk and current Huskie Head Coach Greg Jockims and were coached by the late Guy Vetrie, legendary Canadian university player (Laurentian) and Head Coach (Saskatchewan and UVic). The more time I spend surfing to find articles, the more it becomes apparent that, like many things, the folks out west do it right. Witness the Trinity Western men’s basketball web site, consistently packed with timely, accurate and useful information TWU Site
Our good friend Mike Tucker, former assistant SID at Brock, is doing a splendid job in the lead SID role at UCFV and the web site is only part of the great work. For a first year team in CIS basketball, the communication is at a Nationals level. The mid-season report (under Top Story following the link below) is a solid piece of work UCFV Site Managed by Mike Tucker
Another great site is the Canada West basketball site and it looks to have Howard Tsumura’s finger prints all over it (access the site in the far left of this blog under “Other Useful CIS sites”). Howard, a reporter from the Vancouver Province, along with Wayne Kondro from the Ottawa Citizen and selected other few reporters, work tirelessly and without much fanfare helping to communicate news on CIS basketball. I plan to highlight the great work of several top CIS basketball reporters in a future blog entry. The promotion of the CIS game will flourish once reporters with Howard’s, Wayne’s and others enthusiasm appear in all the top markets in Canada, not simply a few.
