Spartans pounded in California

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – In their first game of a two game tour of southern California the Trinity Western University men’s basketball team fell 105-61 to Westmont College Monday night at Westmont’s Murchison Gymnasium in Santa Barbara, Calif.

Playing their first game in the post Stan Peters era and without fifth year guard Luke Robinson (Ahousat, B.C.) the Spartans struggled to find themselves in the early going trailing 54-21 at the half. The second half was much better for TWU. They were still behind but were able to find their offensive rhythm, dropping the half, 51-40.

Matt Myers (Tumwater, Wash.) with 13 points, Michael Brouwer (Nanaimo, B.C.) with 12 points and Lucas Goltz (Comox, B.C.) with 11 points and six rebounds led the Spartans while Colin Hofer (Reedley, Calif.), Dan Rasp (Camarillo, Calif.) and Matt LeDuc (Glendora, Calif.) each scored 14 points for the Warriors.

The Spartans will now travel to Azusa, Calif. to face Azusa Pacific on Wednesday, December 19 before returning home to Langley, B.C. Game time is set for 7 p.m. Next home game for the Spartans is the weekend of Fri.-Sat., January 4-5 when they will open the second half of Canada West Conference play against the University of Victoria Vikes. Game time at TWU is set for 8 p.m. All TWU home games can be listened to live on Spartan Web Radio.

Game Notes: Westmont shot the light’s out hitting 59% (42-71), while TWU shot 38% (23-60)…the Spartans finished with 23 turnovers to the Warriors 12…Westmont had the edge on the boards 43-26…the Spartans shot 7-26 from behind the three point line, while the Warriors shot 6-11…TWU was coached by interim coach Malcolm Campbell… Westmont’s Bobby Fenske (Carrollton, Tex.) had the best all-around night finishing with 13 points, six rebounds, five assists, three steals and one blocked shot.
