Coming off a disappointing effort against Turkey, the Canadian Jr. National team needs a solid bounce back game against one of the world's top U19 sides in the Australian Emus team. The Aussies (2-0) defeated Turkey by 11 and earlier today edged Nigeria 77-73 to clinch a spot in the next round. Although the Nigerians brought the game back to within 4 points on several occasions as early as midway through the second quarter, they never recovered from a 30-18 hole they found themselves in early. Once again, Australia's 6'10" center Andrew Ogilvy, who is headed to Vanderbilt of the SEC in the fall and is rated as a top NBA prospect by some, led the way for the Emus with 19 points and 3 boards while 6'0" Patrick Mills (pictured), who was recently named Australia's best player under 21 and is headed to St. Mary's (Ca.) in the NCAA West Coast Conference hit for 16 points and added six assists and three rebounds, while Daniel Jackson scored 17 points, with two assists and four rebounds. Here is a recap from the Australian perspective on today's Aussie/Nigeria game Emus hold off Nigeria, play Canada tonight
GROUP C STANDINGS (Top 3 teams advance to next round of 12)
Australia 2-0 +16
Turkey 1-1 +11
Canada 1-1 -1
Nigeria 0-2 -26
Canada clinches a spot in the next round with a victory over Australia (7:30 AM Eastern time start in Serbia) but will also qualify with a loss if Turkey knocks off Nigeria. A Canada loss and a Nigerian win still means Canada moves on assuming the Canadians retain an edge in the points for/point against column. Currently Canada sits at -1 while Nigeria is at -26.
