In a see-saw affair, Alberta came from behind to defeat Quebec 73-68 in the Gold medal game of the Canadian U17 national championships at Bishop's University in Lennoxville, Quebec last evening. Alberta's Manny Arop finished with a game-high 23 points (4-11 3's) and added 9 rebounds while stalward Dominyc Coward added 19 points (8-12 shooting) and 8 boards. Quebec's young phenom Simon Bibeau, who scorched B.C. for 40 points in the semi-finals, led his team with 21 points but was only 1-8 from 3 point land, part of a 5-28 effort beyond the arc overall by Quebec. Laurent Rivard added 11 points and 7 rebounds before fouling out while Bjorn Michaelsen added 11 points and 10 rebounds for Quebec, which suffered their only loss of the tournament in the championship game. B.C. took the Bronze medal by holding off Ontario 92-91 as Marc Trasolini had another double/double of 30 points and 10 rebounds while Sam Freeman added 16 points and 6 boards for the winners. Ontario had 4 players in double figures led by Marvin Binney with 18 points (4-6 3's but only 5-16 overall from the field). Quebec defeated Ontario 88-77 in the championship game of the U15 tournament.
Canada's Senior men's team announced that they will travel with 13 players to Puerto Rico for the Tuto Marchand Cup which opens up tomorrow when Canada faces the host nation beginning at 7:30 PM Eastern time (8:30 PM local). Here is a breakdown of the roster by projected position:
Point Guards: Jermaine Anderson, Carl English
Wings: Denham Brown, Aaron Doornekamp, Olu Famutimi, Andy Rautins, Dave Thomas
Bigs: Rans Brempong, Samuel Dalembert, Levon Kendall, Vlad Kuljanin, Juan Mendez, Jesse Young
Ryan Bell and Jermaine Bucknor were not included for this tournament although this does not necessarily mean either has been cut from the Las Vegas tournament.
