Concordia 92, Laval 86

Stingers won their fourth in a row and avenged a six-point season opening loss in Ste. Foy by defeating Rouge et Or in Montreal.  Laval got off to a great start leading for much of the first 12 minutes of the game but began a spat of turnovers in the second quarter which led to a 31-16 edge for the Stingers and a double digit halftime lead.  Rouge et Or were able to cut it to 2 near the end of the third but the Stingers again pulled away, leading by 10 with 2 minutes remaining and coasted to a comfortable six point win.

6'2" Kyle Desmarais was the difference for the Stingers with 24 points, 6 rebounds, 9 assists and 5 steals while controlling the tempo of the game and scored big buckets down the stretch.  6'5" James Clark added 19 points, getting himself to the foul line while 6'3" Decee Krah added 14 despite picking up two fouls in the first minute of play.  In all, Concordia shot 56% from field and 46% from 3.

Laval coach Jacques Paiement Jr. praised the Stingers, "They really played a good game and made us look bad for long stretches".
The Stingers had trouble with 6'4" Jerome Turcotte (14 points) who continues to be a tough matchup for opponents with his ability to now consistently knock down shots and his creativity around the basket after getting into the lane.  6'3" Hughes Ryan knocked down a couple of 3's for Laval and had 15 points.  6'3" J.F. Beaulieu-Mahieux added 14 for Laval.

After Krah's two early fouls, the Stingers 6'2" sophomore Jean-Andre Moussignac saw extended minutes and did a good job on Laval's 5'9" Xavier Baribeau who had scorched the Stingers in their first meeting in Ste. Foy with 26 points including 8 for 11 from downtown.  Baribeau was held in check for the most part tonight.

Stats when they are avaiable are apparently significantly inaccurate, especially rebounding totals.

The game was one of the few in the country not to be webcast despite featuring a pair of Top 10 teams and the crowd was less than sold out.

QUBL Standings
1 Laval  4-1
2 Concordia  4-1
3 McGill 3-2
4 UQAM 2-3
5 Bishop's 0-6

I was shocked that in the final coaches poll Dec 7 (a poll that, IMO, was not necessary) Laval was dropped 3 spots and Concordia rose 2 positions based solely on this win.
Ridiculous.
Conducting a poll in in a week where only ten CIS games were played (a full OUA weekend, by comparison, is 16 games) and only three top 10 teams were involved is pointless and stupid.
Small wonder some people find it hard to take the CIS seriously.
