Alberta to Face Quebec in U17 Gold Medal Game

Alberta used a game-ending 25-11 run to pull away from Ontario 87-71 and advance to tonight's Gold medal game at the Canadian U17 National championships in Lennoxville, Quebec. Manny Arop had 29 points and 7 rebounds for Alberta while Dominyc Coward added 19 points/8 rebounds. Ontario, led by Kyle Smendziuk's 15 points and 5 assists, could not overcome 21 turnovers committed. After going 16 for 33 from 3 point land in Sunday's win over Manitoba, Ontario made only 9 of 31 3's. Marvin Binney added 11 points (5-23 shooting) and 9 rebounds (7 offensive) for Ontario, which will play B.C. in today's Bronze medal game. The host Quebec side rode a 40 point effort from Simon Bibeau including 5 for 9 from 3 to race to a 43-24 halftime lead en route to defeating British Columbia 85-67. Laurent Rivard added 10 points/7 rebounds for Quebec while B.C.'s Marc Trasolini had another double/double of 26 points (9-19 shooting) and 12 rebounds.

It is good to see provinces other than Ontario playing for the gold.

The OBA needs to review their current program structure to ensure that it is truly a development that is accessible to the best the players.
