Mott’s 29 points leads Gryphons over NCAA’s Chattanooga Mocs
Jay Mott’s 29-point performance led the Guelph Gryphon men’s basketball team to a 74-64 victory over the Chattanooga Mocs on Sunday , September 6 at the W.F. Mitchell Athletic Centre in Guelph, Ont.
The Gryphons opened their 2009 preseason schedule strong, led by Mott’s 29 points which included a light’s out 8-for-14 from three point land. Gryphon point guard Michael Petrella (Brantfornd, Ont.) played a steady game for the Gryphs, with eleven points and nine assists.
In the opening quarter, both teams struggled to score until Charles Agyemang (Toronto, Ont.) put the Gryphons on the board with just under seven on the clock. Dan McCarthy (Guelph, Ont.) looked sharp from long range early in the game, after two consecutive three pointers gave the Gryphons an 8-2 lead at the 5:44minute mark.
The Mocs struggled to score in the first quarter. The only points they could manage to put on the board for the first six minutes were from the free throw line, going six-for-six before Josh Odem scored a three-pointer to get their first field goal (10-9-Guelph) with 3:46 on the clock.
The Gryphons continued their strong play and closed out the first half with a 44-28 lead.
Chattanooga found their legs in the third quarter and outscored the Gryphons 16-4 led by eight points from Keegan Bell.
The Gryphons would respond in the fourth quarter, highlighted by two three pointers from Mott to widen the gap and outscore the Mocs 26-20 in the final frame.
The Gryphons finished with an impressive performance from beyond the arc, shooting 53.3 percent (16-for-30).
Leading the Mocs in scoring was Ricky Taylor with 19-points and Jeff Smith with 12 points. Chattanooga will continue their Canadian trip tomorrow , against the Sheridan Bruins.
The Gryphons continue pre-season action at home against Dalhousie on October 15 at 1:00 p.m.
