Vikings prevail in border battle renewal, notch seventh straight win

BELLINGHAM, Wash. --- Forward Derrick Webb (Sr., Port Orchard/South Kitsap) and guard Morris Anderson (Sr., Federal Way) tied for game-high honors with 18 points each as Western Washington University defeated Simon Fraser University, 96-43, in a non-league men's basketball game Wednesday on Haggen Court at Sam Carver Gymnasium. The Vikings shot 60.3 percent from the field, hitting 35 of their 58 attempts as they improved to 8-1 with their seventh consecutive victory. Simon Fraser fell to 8-4. Forward Chris Parades came off the bench to lead the Clansmen with nine points and a game-high nine rebounds. The game was the first official, counting contest between the two schools since back-to-back meetings to end 1998-99 season. Simon Fraser, located in Burnaby, B.C., is in the first of a two-year candidacy period to become the first Canadian affiliate of NCAA Division II and will be a member of the Great Northwest Athletic conference beginning with the 2010-11 school year. Webb was 7-of-9 from the field, including 4-of-4 on 3-pointers. Anderson was perfect on seven free-throw attempts, running his streak of consecutive successes to 30, and had three of the Vikings' 11 steals. Forward Rory Blanche (So., Ashland, OR) had 14 points for Western, going 6-of-6 from the field. Center Zach Bruce (Sr., Oceanside, CA) added 12 points, and guard Andrew Ready (Sr., Chicago, IL/Westinghouse) contributed 10 points and a game-high five assists. The Vikings took control quickly, hitting four of their first six shots and taking a 14-2 lead less than three minutes into the game. Western held a 23-6 lead with 14:34 left in the first half, and had a 55-20 advantage at halftime, shooting 67.9 percent (19-of-28) from the field in the opening period. The two schools first played in 1967. Western now holds a 42-23 advantage in the all-time series.
