OUA Wilson Cup: Backgrounder

We will follow up with a more detailed preview of Saturday's Wilson Cup game in Windsor between the Lancers and OUA East champions Carleton Ravens (a crowd in upwards of 3,000 is expected as apparently temporary stands will be added to accommodate additional supporters). However in the interim, we've taken a look at the history of the Wilson Cup since the OUAA (forerunner of the OUA) was established in 1971-72 in the context of both the Lancers and Ravens. As some from that era may recall, the Lancers, along with Waterloo, dominated the first decade of OUAA West play. In ten out of the first 11 seasons of OUAA play, the Lancers were in the OUAA Final Four or were in the OUAA West championship game. (There were some years in the early 70's when an eight-team OUAA playoff tournament took place, mixing East and West teams into a common tournament). In the 11 seasons between 1971-72 and 1981-82, Windsor had:

- 3 Wilson Cup championships ('71-'72, '72-'73, '78-'79)
- 6 Wilson Cup appearances (losses in 3 consecutive seasons between '79 & '82)
- 4 OUAA West playoff championships.

Saturday will be Windsor's seventh appearance in the Wilson Cup and the Lancers hold an overall record in the Wilson Cup (OUAA championship game) since 1971-72 of 3 wins and 3 losses, all during their great run in the 70's and early 80's. Until this season, the Lancers had not participated in the OUA West championship since their amazing run of dominance (25 seasons).

Carleton's dominance has been more recent as the Ravens make their fifth Wilson Cup appearance since 2000-01 and sixth in the history of the program (Ravens won the 1987-88 OUA East title and hosted the Wilson Cup in the old Ravens Nest). Carleton, with a Wilson Cup record of 3 wins and 2 losses overall, has won their last 3 appearances, interrupted last season by McMaster after the Ravens lost in the OUA East final to York. Carleton also lost at Western in 2000-01 and at home to Western in '87-88.
