Capital Hoops Classic: Game Day

Tonight's game at Scotiabank Place is now poised to set the CIS attendance record for a regular season league game as about 9,100 tickets have been sold. Courtesy of the CIS web site, here are the top four all-time crowds on record in CIS history:

12,139 Copps Coliseum, Hamilton, Oct. 25, 2004, Memorial vs. McMaster (Basketball vs. Bullying: One-on-One event) *
11,853 Copps Coliseum, Hamilton, Oct. 30, 2003, UNB vs. McMaster (Basketball vs. Bullying: One-on-One event) *
11,000 Halifax, March 1978, Acadia vs. Saint Mary’s (CIS championship final)
10,877 Copps Coliseum, Hamilton, Oct. 25, 2005, McGill vs. McMaster (Basketball vs. Bullying: One-on-One event) Non-conference

Both teams practiced at Scotiabank Place last night as the Gee-Gees went from 5 to 7 pm and the Ravens followed from 7 to 9 pm. The Ottawa affiliate for Rogers Television also dedicated its entire one-hour segment on the weekly "Big Bad Sports Show" hosted by Tony House to the game. Guests included Carleton Athletic Director Drew Love, Gee-Gees Head Coach Dave DeAveiro and forward Curtis Shakespeare plus Ottawa Citizen basketball writer and Rogers Sports colour analyst Wayne Kondro, long-time supporter of Canadian university basketball. uOttawa Athletic Director Luc Gelineau, originally scheduled to appear, was a no-show. Rogers Cable 22 in Ottawa will broadcast tonight's game LIVE! at 8 PM from Scotiabank Place. Check your local listings (or call your community cable operator) for further details outside Ottawa. Unfortunately, neither of the 2 major daily newspapers in the Nation's Capital have published a preview on tonight's game. Stay tuned for a game report on this site later tonight.

Not one article mentioning tonight's Gee-Gees Vs. Carleton men's game in either today's Ottawa Citizen or Sun! Clearly, these hockey rags don't deserve local basketball fan support.
